Listen Well - part 7 of an 8 part series

One-third of a protein bar and a handful of dehydrated fruit oozed energy into my cells. The warmth of the sun caressed my face. After some time I sighed, “We’re still lost. Now what?” My dark-haired friend thought we should walk west, searching for a wide open swath before heading downhill. My blonde-haired friend thought we should walk east, searching for the same physical feature. I felt we should head to the creek below because we knew the road was on the opposite side and ran the same way as the stream. Each of our opinions held pros and cons. The conversation held angst because we each felt our own plan was correct.

Refresh Body and Soul - part 6 of an 8 part series

I suddenly felt an approaching melt down. My bruised legs ached from climbing through the forest. If I didn’t rest, I’d either cry or get testy with my companions. High on the hunt for mushrooms, my Neanderthal genes flooded endorphins into my bloodstream. I scrambled from one honey-hole to the next. Over logs, under trees, sometimes bashing extremities into whatever came my way. My pony tail holder got caught on twigs and ripped out of my hair. I couldn’t pull myself away from the temptation. My water bottle remained full and lunch time whizzed by.

Delegation of Responsibility…part 3 of an 8 part series

…is like having a sleep-over in a haunted house and expecting a quiet night.

My second mistake involved letting my friend take the role of guide rather than being responsible and observant. I felt so confident and happy-go-lucky that I didn’t even pay attention to which forest roads we took. After parking and walking down the trail, I kept my eyes on the ground, jumping from morel to morel instead of paying attention to physical landmarks for backtracking home.
